Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was born on 27 March 1964 in the village of Bhavran, Po Kitpal, in Nadaun Tehsil, Hamirpur district, Himachal Pradesh, India. Raised as the son of the late Shri Rasil Singh, Sukhu pursued higher education and earned both a Master of Arts (M.A.) and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.).

During his college years at Government Degree College, Sanjauli (Shimla), he demonstrated early leadership skills by serving as Class Representative in 1982–1983, then as General Secretary (1983–1984), and subsequently as President (1984–1985) of the college community. He also held the position of Department Representative for Law at Himachal Pradesh University in 1985–1986.

Political Beginnings & Party Leadership

Sukhu’s political journey began with involvement in the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Indian National Congress. He served as the State President of NSUI from 1989 to 1995. He then held key roles within the State Youth Congress, serving as General Secretary (1995–1998) and later as President (1998–2008).

Parallel to his youth politics, Sukhu also entered municipal governance as a Councillor in the Municipal Corporation of Shimla, holding the position for two consecutive terms from 1993 to 2003. His rise within the party continued as he became General Secretary of the Pradesh Congress Committee from 2008 to 2012, and then President of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) from 8 January 2013 to 11 January 2019.

Legislative Career

Entering electoral politics officially, Sukhu was first elected as a Member of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Nadaun constituency in 2003, re-elected in 2007, and once again in 2017. Between 2007 and 2012, he served as the Chief Whip of the Congress Legislature Party, and from 2018 to 2022, he took part in several legislative committees including the Business Advisory, Library, Research & Reference Committee, and Public Undertakings & Privileges Committee.
